Frequently Asked Questions & Prescription Policies

Telehealth & Appointments

Which states do you serve?

We provide high-fidelity, HIPAA-compliant telehealth services for residents located in Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Washington, Idaho, and Iowa. You must be physically located within one of these states at the time of your virtual appointment.

How do virtual appointments work?

Prior to your session, you will receive a secure, encrypted video link via email or text. You can join your appointment using a computer, tablet, or smartphone with a working camera, microphone, and a stable internet connection. We recommend finding a quiet, private space for your comfort and confidentiality.

What age groups do you care for?

We provide comprehensive psychiatric evaluation and medication management for children, teens, and adults.

Medication & Prescription Policies

How does medication management work at Illuminating Life?

We believe medication is a tool—not a total solution. Our approach is conservative, evidence-based, and highly collaborative. During your initial evaluation, we review your full medical history, past medication trials, lifestyle factors, and treatment goals. We focus on finding the lowest effective dose while prioritizing your long-term health and well-being.

What is your controlled substance policy?

To ensure patient safety, regulatory compliance, and high-quality care:

  • Initial Evaluations: Controlled substances (such as stimulants for ADHD or benzodiazepines for anxiety) are not guaranteed during an initial visit. Prescriptions are based on clinical necessity following a thorough evaluation.

  • In-Person / Ryan Haight Act Compliance: Federal and state regulations regarding telehealth prescribing of controlled substances are strictly followed. Depending on current federal rules and your state of residence, periodic in-person visits or additional documentation (such as primary care provider records) may be required.

  • Controlled Substance Refills: Refills for controlled medications are only provided during scheduled appointments and require ongoing monitoring. Early refills, replacement of lost/stolen prescriptions, or requests made outside of business hours are generally not permitted.

How do I request a medication refill?

Please submit refill requests through the Patient Portal or contact your pharmacy at least 3 to 5 business days before running out of medication. Routine refills are addressed during regular office hours (Monday–Thursday 7am–8pm, Friday 8am–2pm).

What should I do if I am having a emergency or mental health crisis?

Telehealth services are not designed for acute psychiatric emergencies. If you are experiencing a crisis, severe side effects, or thoughts of self-harm:

  • Call or text the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline at 988

  • Call 911 or go to your nearest hospital emergency room.
